Hobby becomes recipe for success
I was able to meet other business owners who were on a similar path to me Kerry Watson
What started as a hobby for Kerry Watson has turned into a business, and now the future looks tasty for Kerry’s Sweetcakes.
“I have had a longstanding passion for baking and developed my craft over the years.” Kerry explains. “I am completely self-taught and what started off as a hobby has transpired into a business making for friends and family. Word of mouth has enabled me to grow my customer base into a viable enterprise.”
There have been some challenges along the way, such as getting her pricing positioned correctly. But Kerry did her research and her customers have confirmed that she got this right by returning to her time after time. She also refined her cake decoration skills with plenty of practice. “Getting the shop was big highlight.” Kerry says, “It has always been a dream of mine to have my own baking setup. I look forward to going into work every day and planning and organising my day.”
Kerry’s journey was helped by enterprise agency Nwes, who supported her with developing her business plan, marketing and social media. She says this has been invaluable. “Support from Nwes has made the process much less stressful. I was encouraged to attend some free training on starting up a business, which was really useful and I was able to meet other business owners who were on a similar path to me.”
Nwes Business Advisor Lou Cessford says “Kerry wants to expand and do outside catering at which point she will employ either her son, who is a trained chef, or another person to help with this. She will also need a refrigerated vehicle to achieve this successfully.” Lou believes that Kerry’s hard work and commitment will ensure Kerry’s Sweetcakes continues to be a success.
Kerry Watson is a client of Nwes, delivering business support in the East of England.
